Food Fortification & the use of Pro40

What is Food fortification?

Food fortification means adding important nutrients like vitamins and minerals to food to make it healthier or to improve the nutritional density. It helps improve people’s nutrition and can support public health, whilst being safe with minimal risk.

It is a simple and affordable way to prevent nutrient deficiencies, and it is often used in everyday foods including salt, flour, and milk. This practice has been used for over a century, beginning with iodine added to salt in the 1920s to prevent iodine deficiency in the population.

Types of Food Fortification:

  • Mass Fortification or Large-scale to reach the general population, often mandatory ie. The addition of nutrients to staple foods (e.g. Iodine in salt or Iron/Folic Acid added to flour).
  • Market-driven (voluntary) fortification is when food companies choose to add specific nutrients to their products. For example, many cereals are fortified with iron and B vitamins to make them seem healthier and more appealing to buyers.
  • Targeted Fortification is when nutrients are added to foods or drinks made for specific groups of people. For example, baby food may have extra iron for infants, and special drinks or supplements for older adults may include added calories, protein and additional nutrients when someone isn’t getting enough from their diet alone.
  • Household (point-of-use) fortification is when nutrients are added to food or fluids at home, right before eating/drinking. For example adding Nutreat PRO40, a protein, vitamin and mineral supplement powder, into a meal to make it more nutritious.
